Meaning “crayon” in Swedish, Krita is beautifully emulates traditional mediums like charcoal, painting, and much more. After hitting their Kickstarter goal last year, Krita continued their non-stop development to becoming a free alternative to Adobe Photoshop and Painter. Students will practice drawing exercises as well as learn about pixels and photo manipulation with this open source favorite.
Blender is the 3D powerhouse that is disrupting the CG landscape with reliable and innovative tools packaged efficiently and available for… yes, you guessed it — FREE! Serving a mostly European user base, Blender has been getting noticed by professional animators and VFX artists as more projects reveal they are including this Dutch software in their pipeline. Tony DeRose, Senior Scientist at Pixar publicly praised Blender as a tool worth learning and Sean Kennedy, an Oscar-award-winning Compositor on “Life of Pi”, claims Blender is the only 3D application he needs.
