Welcome to the only classes in San Diego where students can learn Computer Animation and Game Design using a combination of OPEN SOURCE and FREE software. These unique 4-hour workshops get kids and teens acquainted with Blender, Krita, and Unity, some of the most powerful applications for artists today.
- 1:30pm – 3:00pm Digital Painting and Illustration with Krita
- 3:00pm – 3:15pm Break
- 3:15pm – 4:15pm 3D Blender Exercises
- 4:15pm-4:30pm Break
- 4:30pm-5:30pm Combined lessons using Blender, Krita, and Unity Game Engine
Meaning “crayon” in Swedish, Krita is beautifully emulates traditional mediums like charcoal, painting, and much more. After hitting their Kickstarter goal last year, Krita continued their non-stop development to becoming a free alternative to Adobe Photoshop and Painter. Students will practice drawing exercises as well as learn about pixels and photo manipulation with this open source favorite.
Blender is the 3D powerhouse that is disrupting the CG landscape with reliable and innovative tools packaged efficiently and available for… yes, you guessed it — FREE! Serving a mostly European user base, Blender has been getting noticed by professional animators and VFX artists as more projects reveal they are including this Dutch software in their pipeline. Tony DeRose, Senior Scientist at Pixar publicly praised Blender as a tool worth learning and Sean Kennedy, an Oscar-award-winning Compositor on “Life of Pi”, claims Blender is the only 3D application he needs.
Game Engines are responsible for assembling all the artwork and making it interactive. Unity’s Professional version carries a $1500 annual subscription fee but the Personal Edition became available for free last year to encourage more artists to create content.
