“Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.”

-Albert Einstein

I will never forget the lessons in painting, clay, and drawing flipbooks when I was a kid.  I was fortunate my parents enrolled me in after-school art classes in my early years, and I’m sure it contributed towards my career in animation, which I’ve been involved for over 15 years.

Exposure to the 3D animation process helps children appreciate the structure of a team environment and to respect every level of hierarchy in the pipeline. My beginner level Blender classes are a collection of short exercises which teach the fundamentals of creating CG (Computer Graphics). Each class is a compilation of short exercises that slowly build the necessary skills of modeling, animation, texturing, lighting, and rendering.

The general focus will be on navigating the Blender interface, problem solving, and following directions, but included in each lesson are many mathematical applications. We will be analyzing and manipulating graphs, setting keyframes, and adjusting timing – all of which utilize Algebra, Geometry, and basic Trigonometry without the intimidation of homework or exams.

What is Blender?

Blender is a complete 3D imaging program available as open source since 2002. Used to make Big Buck Bunny, Sintel, and the most recent Tears of Steel, Blender proved itself capable of quality animation while pushing the development of the software.

  • 3D modeling, texturing, animation, rigging
  • Particle simulation
  • Game engine
  • Easy to download and install (under 60 MB)
  • Available for Windows, Mac and Android
  • Software download at www.blender.org
  • Popular alternative to Autodesk Maya

The material taught in the Kids’ Classes is the same as Adult and Teen Classes but the only difference is the approach and language are simplified for the younger audience. In my experience sometimes the kids surpass adults! Upon completion of 3 Blender Classes each child will receive an FX Dojo Certificate, which allows entrance into the next level of Blender classes.
